I was walking to the cafeteria at work (Qualcomm Inc.) the other day, and noticed a display from the City of San Diego’s Recycling Program. A few representatives were giving out information and freebies, and I snagged the nifty bag above.

It’s produced by an outfit called 1 Bag at a Time. I planned to use it as a lunch bag, so when I buy lunch at the cafeteria I wouldn’t have to lug it back in yet another hateful plastic bag. It seems stupid to need a new plastic bag just to walk between two buildings with some food, especially as it gets thrown away within minutes.

What I didn’t expect was that the tag on the bag would be so informative. Here’s what it said:

14 plastic bags
contain enough petroleum to drive a car a mile.

380 billion plastic bags
or wraps are thrown away in America each year.

Making a paper bag emits 70%
more global warming gases
than making a plastic bag.

0 paper bags
biodegrade in landfills due to a lack of oxygen

Cities spend up to
17 cents per bag
in disposal costs, wasting millions of tax dollars.

Save the world 1 bag at a time
www.1BagataTime.com

Makes you think, doesn’t it?
